term='breathe'/>

1 2 3...Breathe...Breathe.

Yes this week my theme and topic is the art of breathing.

When I work out I have to focus on my breathing for the sake of control over the weight, my movement and my health (so I do not pass out). This is so important to any athlete while practicing or participating in his/her sport. So why should it not be that important in the building and growth of my business...

I have again taking time away from my business duties, such as blogging, creating and moving forward because I was suffocating in the here and now of that time. I started selling my cards on Etsy.com in 2008 and before I knew it I was making more cards then I was selling. I had a mess of material in one corner of my bedroom, driving my now fiancee' insane. At that time I didnt think she understood my desire, passion and goal in this craft... But as time went on I later found that it was me who didnt understand this business/industry. I was always told your first year you will most defineitly spend more than you make because you are building the business, but when the second year came to a close I noticed I was still doing the same thing, spending more then I made. I did craft shows, craft show promotions, joined teams, blogged with teams and FREE give-a-ways whenever and however I could, anything to get my name and product in the hands and faces of people.

So...I got myself prepared to re-focus on business.
My first step was to re-do my business plan. With the experinece(s) I have had in the previous years I knew more what I wanted, what my purpose was and how I wanted to get things done.

My second step was to focus and breathe...I began to again search my competiton and see what have they been up to. Has their style change? Are their designs still similar and/or the same as when I first enetered the industry.

My third step was to focus on where do I begin after the first 2 steps. So I organized what I already had in stock. Searched for a new craft shows to do this year (summer) and then relisted many of my best designs on Etsy.com This was not the end of it though. I also figured I could not just by and wait on the great creators of Etsy.com to market my goods to other hundrend thousands and/or millions of handmade buyers, I had to get up and go find them. There is nothing wrong with sharing buyers, because that is how business works, but sometimes you need all the focus on you when you are making the presentation. So I have again built a website and working on building that online presence. I am also still out searching for consignment shops and shoop willing to buy wholesale (which is a big long story I will pick up another day).

But through all of that I take a day or two to breathe... Sometimes I just go outside and smell the roses. I just like many of you want this with passion but if you drive yourself crazy when it comes you will not be able to enjoy it...

So BREATHE... 1 2 3 take a step back and BREATHE....

Business Journal-Day 1

Hey everyone.

I have been away too long. But through my time away from my wonderful blogging (lol) I have learned many new things about myself that has changed the way I think and do business. One of those things was I needed a journal. I wanted to start jotting my day to day/week to week/month to month actions down to be aware of what I am doing and what needed to be done. I am open to comments, ideas and advice if you so choose to share or offer.

So today I started a journal dedicated strictly to my card business. After spending sometime in the Business Library in NYC on 40th and 6th (by Bryant Park) I figured there were things I was not doing or doing but not correctly. Anyway started the journal and jotted down all the things I want to accomplish this month. On the first page I put what my goal was heading into the new year was.

"Have complete paper work for business complete (DBA and so and so). Open business bank account. Grow sales to 30 orders a month. Brand myself (logo) and market, market, market..."

So for November I broke it down like this:

Blog post
Social Networking
Product
Marketing
Research & Business

With each catagory I wrote what I wanted to do and how I thought I can do it and quick ideas.
So so far so good. Any start is a good start. So keep an eye out to see and hear what I am doing...

THE Smartphone War...

Heres a great read I found online about your cellphone. I personally have a Blackberry and love it. Yes it is very addictive, hence the name 'Crackberry', but its because its so easy to use and when running a business you need something that can serve as your assistant not a distraction like the iPhone and all the useless apps and gaming play (not that I would mind having one...LOL)

Great Geek Debates:
iPhone vs. Blackberry
By Curtis Silver
August 11, 2009

There are plenty of smartphones, but only two celebrities. Like other big celebs, they go by one name: Blackberry and iPhone.
Applications recently, a co-worker wrote an application for his Blackberry that would automatically ignore calls to his phone from a particular mail-order steak company. The application allowed him to command his phone to ignore any number he specified. The call still rang through, but was ignored immediately. I found this to be the most helpful application I’ve ever seen. That said, I’ve not been impressed by the application selection the Blackberry offers. While there are some free applications, most are second rate at best and the selection of pay applications isn’t nearly as robust as it should be. The Blackberry App Store is like a pawn shop that only sells used 8-track players.

Application development on the iPhone has been one of the highlights of the device since its inception. Even though there are several hundred useless applications, there are hundreds more to make life easier in the palm of your hand. Like the Remote application that turns your iPhone into a stereo remote so you don’t have to leave the comfy confines of your easy chair.

I have to mention this comment from @tmoney941:"Do you really need an application to help you decide where to eat, how much to tip, where you parked, and what to wear? I’ve got one of those … they’re called wives."

That’s pretty much my sentiment when it comes to most iPhone applications. That aside, due to the overwhelming availability of applications and the encouragement by Apple to design your own, iPhone takes this category by a wide margin. iPhone +1.

Physical Attributes
Early on, the iPhone had a bad reputation for being fragile because of the touchscreen face and slick feel. When dropped on the cement too many times, any phone would eventually break, but the iPhone proved that it actually is quite durable. As long as you don’t drop it on its face. Without anything protecting the glass, you are looking at a shattered iPhone.
The touchscreen and motion sensibility on the iPhone is unmatched by any other touchscreen devices. Bump to exchange contact information, play games by tilting the phone, zoom in with a finger slide motion. It’s simply amazing technology and even the touchscreen Blackberry Storm doesn’t come close. But you still wouldn’t want to drop an iPhone more than once.Since I drop my cellphones a lot, I strolled over to talk to my IT friends about the durability of the Blackberry. They are about split even on which phone they carry. There are either Blackberry phones or iPhones in IT. They are not split on the durability however. Several of them have had to replace their iPhones due to cracked screens. Many of them have dropped their Blackberry over and over with some scratches on the casing. The worst I’ve heard about the damage to a Blackberry is the scratching it gets on the back if you spin it around on the table too many times. Which is just too much fun not to do.Even if it gets run over by a truck the Blackberry still holds its form, avoids cracks and doesn’t lose a key. The Blackberry, built for business and travel, is a durable and strong phone. Blackberry takes this category. Blackberry + 1

Gaming
The iPhone makes full use of the motion sensor and touchscreen to bring us dynamic games from flight simulators to action games to simple board games. Playing games on the iPhone is a fantastic and handy experience, especially multiplayer games. Plus, as mentioned before, you can design your own games if you have the know-how.Blackberry has Brickbreaker. No contest. iPhone + 1

Personal vs. Business FunctionalityCompanies run Blackberry server products. From the connectivity to Microsoft Exchange server and the ease of mobile e-mail, the Blackberry is far superior to the iPhone. Blackberry was created with business use in mind. While it may have a slower CPU, the Blackberry makes up for it with its office applications. There is a reason it’s nicknamed “the Crackberry.”

When it comes to security on the Blackberry, well, let’s just say it’s secure enough for President Obama to use. Official statement from Blackberry as to the security:
The BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution has been approved for storing and transmitting sensitive data by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as well as government organizations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Austria, Australia and New Zealand. The iPhone has more storage, a faster CPU and more RAM. All great attributes for playing games. As I’ve witnessed at work, the iPhone is the anti-productivity phone. Don’t pretend like you are holier than thou and don’t spend countless work hours downloading apps and playing the new Iron Man game or any of the thousand other games.
Recently, the iPhone became compatible with Exchange Server, which was a huge step toward integrating with business. The iPhone has made great strides in favor of business use. Many businesses are making the switch, however, there are still security concerns with the phone. It also doesn’t help the iPhone for business that it’s only available on AT&T in the United States. Companies like to price shop and AT&T’s service isn’t that great in all areas.
Apple is making strides in the security department, as all new iPhones come equipped with MobileMe, which allows you to find your lost iPhone as well as remotely wipe its memory clean. As for personal usage, the Blackberry is a sturdy and reliable phone. But due to the wide range of applications and amazing graphical interface and selection of games, the iPhone wins the personal use battle by a wide margin. So this category is a draw. Blackberry wins for business use and security, iPhone wins for personal use. Blackberry + 1, iPhone + 1

Never forget the Chuck Norris Factor.
The Chuck Norris factorReally, it all comes down to Chuck Norris, because if he doesn’t like it, he’ll roundhouse kick it out of existence. The Blackberry sports a great game simply called Chuck Norris: Bring on the Pain. Meanwhile, the Apple store rejected a Chuck Norris app, a Chuck Norris joke generator, because they claimed it ridiculed a public figure. Don’t they know that it’s impossible to ridicule Chuck Norris? More importantly, shunning Chuck Norris in whatever format is like challenging Superman to a duel by slapping him with Kyrptonite gloves. Or, it’s like slapping Chuck Norris in the face with your ungloved hand. This round clearly goes to the Blackberry as it’s probably what Chuck Norris is using. Blackberry + 1

The Winner? Final tally: iPhone +3, Blackberry + 3.

Listen, I carry a Blackberry. I’m not going for hip or trendy, I’m going for functionality. I want to be able to check my e-mail at stoplights. I want to be able to picture message without jumping through hoops. When it comes to functioning in the business world and having a practical phone, the Blackberry wins hands down. The iPhone is a fun phone and has a lot of cool features and applications. I really wanted an iPhone, but realized that it was a want. It’s a neat toy, but I can’t see it moving into the business world and becoming what the Blackberry is to business — yet. The best solution I’ve seen so far: Many Blackberry owners I know also have an iPod Touch for all their entertainment and portable gaming needs. So it’s a best of both worlds if you will. I’m sure that waffling answer won’t satisfy the masses. The bottom line is, we’re geeks. Geeks like awesome tech toys and the iPhone is certainly that. From its gaming to its thousands of unique and specific applications, it’s a device that every geek wants to carry even if they already have a Blackberry. I worked at a car dealership, a general department store and I also sold real estate."

The manager took a liking to the young man and gave him a job saying, "You can start tomorrow. Be here by 9:00 in the morning and ask to speak with Tom Barnes. He is the assistant store manager and he will show you what you need to do. I'll come down after we close and see how you did."

With that they shook hands and parted ways. After the store closed and the doors were locked up , the boss went to see how the young man's first day had gone. After looking all over the store, the manager finally found the young man sitting on a box in the stockroom, hunched over and looking exhausted.

"How was your first day, son?" he asked.
"It was difficult learning about all the departments and products you sell here sir," The young man replied.

Then the manager asked, "How many sales did you make today, son?"
The young man replied, "Only one."
The manager then asked, "Well, how many customers did you talk to?"
Once again, he replied, "Only one."
The manager responded, "Just one? Our sales people average 20 to 30 customers a day! How much was the sale for?"
"$101,237.65," he replied.
"$101,237.65!" exclaimed the manager. "What the heck did you sell?"

The young man responded, "First, I sold the man a small fishhook. Then I sold him a medium fishhook. Then I sold him a larger fishhook. Then I sold him a new fishing rod, reel and a whole tackle box full of lures and stuff. Then, I asked him where he was going fishing, and he said he was going down the coast. I explained to him that if he was going to the coast, he was going to need a boat. We went down to the boat department and I sold him a twin engine fishing boat. After that, he said he didn't think his Honda Civic could pull it, so I took him down to the automotive department and sold him a 4x4 Expedition."

The store manager, with a look of astonishment on his face proclaimed, "A guy came in here to buy a fish hook, and you sold him a BOAT and a TRUCK?"

"No sir!" The young man said. "He came in to buy tampons for his wife. While I was showing him where the tampons were, I said, "Dude, your weekend's shot. You should go fishing."

*PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT MY STORY/JOKE, just so wild had to share!!!

Question of the WEEK...

Steeping outside of the box for a moment!

What are you doing or have done to improve your sales and your overall business growth?

Web 2.0-Social Networking

Sites such as LinkedIn There may be other sites more relevant to your business. There are social networks for people over 60, booklovers and diabetics.

People are sensitive to over marketing...too much selling and promoting. Your first step to developing an email marketing campaign is to collect email addresses. It would be a great idea to have your website set up to encourage people to submit their email address easily. You can also collect email at your job, craft shows/events or through a guest book.

There are many email companies out there but you want to be line with the new spam laws, monitor the responses as well as create a design template to make your communication/newsletter visually appealing.

Just a few to name:
Constant Contact
iContact
Streamsend

And there are so many more but I select the three because of the great reviews and suggestions of others who have used some the above names.

Once you get your list of emails you will need to then consider how you want to reach out to your customers. You can generate revenue through a newsletter, by mentioning a SALE in your shop or the availability of coupons. You can use your email marketing to build awareness about new products, new shops you have opened or where you r product is now being sold. ie: I have decided for myself to create sections, in which for customers in New York state I will send notice of what show I will be at...

Your point is to keep your name in the mind of the customer. Many businesses have started blogs and they have proven to be a very effective way of positioning ones business in the light.

It is suggested that your blog not too SALES-oriented, post too long or too polished...
Your blog becomes your voice, NO, the voice of your business and/or brand.
It is important to keep your blog post frequent, as to keep it on top of the rotating list and to be found by those searching for topics or things you may have posted. Whether you are running an online or actual store, you need to the proper legal documentations. When in the web you are exposed to unauthorized access or data theft, so it is best to set up your business as a corpration or LLC (limited liability company) rather then as a sole proprietroship or general partnership. A corporation and llc limit your personal liability as the latter two do not.

There are also the factors such as taxes and legal issues depending on your choice of business structure. A corporation has strict rules to adhere to, such as forming boards, issuing stocks and marking periodic filings (this varys statet to state). It has been recommended that you incorporate because the cost is way less to form then an LLC.

Your business will also need a federal tax identification number (you get one from irs.gov). Your state Dept of Taxation and Finance can authorize you collect sales tax from in state residents. Some states require online stores/retailers to collect taxes on sales to out of state buyers. This means you would have to contact each state, register your business with its taxation department and file to collect sales tax. If not you could be subject to back taxes and penalties.

Using a BUZZ to build on...

We all know the best way to get ahead is to get people talking and inquiring about our wares. This is the best way to get more business and exposure.

Well heres a bit of info to think about. Big businesses/companies do the same thing but for different reasons then many of us. These companies set up blogs, boards or communitys to help them understand the people/buyer, see what they like and how they could ultimately improve their product(s).

Boards/communities are started to get people talking about the latest product. Questions and thoughts like:

What are your thoughts on this product?

What should the theme, color, shape and full picture should/should've been?

What would have made the product better?

What made you buy it or what will make you buy it?

OPINIONS! OPINIONS! OPINIONS!

Many us sell our wares on sites where feedback of our service, communication and end product can be left. But I noticed that many times the feedback is just praise and glory. Nothing wrong with that at all! But wouldn't you like to know what they truly thought? Like if maybe, for example, I sell cards so if the buyer or anyone else for that matter thought the birthday card would be nice or better as an all occasion card. Maybe they felt the colors could be differnt. Maybe not a flower bug a beetle...How much they would and wouldn't pay for that type of card.

There are just so many questions I have alone! A focous group or community would be so helpful in growing ones business and improving ones products for future sales.

This was just a thought but a deep one we should consider...

Look for the Handcrafted by LaMar Community blog coming soon where buyers can share thoughts of coming card designs and alreay available designs.

Question of the WEEK...

For many of us we are currently in our second to fourth years or more of running a small business.

How have you grown, changed or restructured your business

to keep it going forward? One day on the phone while discussing how business was she said, "Remember you only started selling your cards a year ago. It takes many businesses years to see any growth and profit." Right then I realized she was right and I was too caught up in the fact that I had a 100 sales online in one year, my #1 goal for 2008 by the way, and I had just got a new site up,
Handcrafted by LaMar , which seemed to be getting great hits.

So again I drew up another plan, but this time this plan was like I was starting from scratch just with more insight. After all the post I did here trying to help and share with others the things I learned and was learning, I took some of my own advice, tips and tricks to make them work for me.

I did a paid search ad with MSN, and for 2 months straight I pulled in over 2000 hits each month. I finally got a budget down right and have been on it to the teeth. I booked shows early for this year so I could have more time to create and dress my table, appearance is everything. I started to recycle more, for example, I have tons of scrap paper and found ways to make cards out it with fresh new looks. I also went back to the drawing the board and recreated some old designs and certainly made new ones too.

So this year look for great new post and tons of myself on this blog. When I say myself I mean all the experiances from the topics I shared with you... I hope to see you around.

Getting Back To Basics...

Hello again...
I first want to apologize to all my faithful followers, readers, bloggers and friends who have read this blog, supported this blog and was to let me know I have fallen off...
But like many of you I need advice and help to keep my Small Business afloat. So I did what I hope many of you do when after you've read one of my post, considered the facts and took some advice.

Yes, I took some of the advice I was preaching (cant wait to share that with you all) and most of all I took it 'BACK TO THE BASICS'...

BACK TO THE BASICS?!
Yeah... I needed to go back to the day and time when I first decided to turn making cards into a business. I needed to find that young, fresh off the bench, ready to play game. I needed to re-define my target audience (still a work in progress). I needed to hone in more on my craft instead of just focusing on selling, marketing and showing off my 100 sales (was just doing the same thing over and over).

What I did first?
Like I said I looked deeper into who my audience was. I feel when it comes to handcrafted cards everyone should have one, buy one and/or get one. The truth of the matter was that that wasn't the case. I began to realize that I sold better to those who were throwing parties, doing events, weddings, baby showers, or restaurant owners. I know that sounds like a lot but it really isn't or at least it wasn't. I also took notice that few people bought cards in bulk. Those who did were of what I call my 'higher end' clientele.
The next thing to do was to use all resources I could get my hands on. I had my future wife take cards to her job... Did Holiday Cards for her sisters job at a very low price (way low)... My mother took a look book to her job... Even got a few co-workers to buy cards (tons of them too...).
The next thing was to redesign the look of the cards. Step outside the box. Use images I would never thought to use before and colors I would never.

What did this do in the long run?
Well I am not at a hundred thousand yet and its still just me at the controls...
But it did help with my exposure.
It got out there.
It got me a few great returns buyers (YAY!).
And most of all, it help keep the spirits up when it seemed as the economy was gonna ruin much of everything...

Stay tune for the second part of "GETTING BACK TO BASICS"

Search Engine Marketing...

Is your website working for you or are you working for your website?
As the world turns, the web evolves and so must your business.

Search engines allow you to appear in front of people who expressed interest in your product or service by typing a few KEY words relevant to your site. Your web link can appear in 2 places on a search engine page; as a natural result or a sponsored result.

Natural is the term for links that appear after a word or phrase is typed into a search engine. Sponsored links are advertisements you must pay for and are shown above or next to natural search results, which appears when keywords are typed into a search box.

Keywords.
The best way to gather keywords is to begin with some generic words then hone in more specific words-consider alternative words that mean the same thing. After you find 10 to 15 keywords they then need to be embedded into your meta pages. These are commands that describe the page it is coded to. Note they are invisible to your customer but important for search engines to find you. In addition to your keywords, search engines consider the viewable text of your site in order to determine its position in the results.

Paid Searches.
Paid search works somewhat like an auction. You bid on search terms for your product/service. Once you pay for the term(s) you develop a text-based advertisment for posting along side natural results, then pay-per-click when user click your ad. The advantage here is that your ad can appear near the top of the results and you get to set a budget that when met will automatically remove your ad. You should consider creating a budget; 1) how much you will spend over a period of time 2) how much you're willing to allocate for each click. The more $ you pay for a click through, the higher you will likely rank.

Keep in mind when it comes to generic terms, you are likely to be out bid by companies with bigger budgets. If you have the money, bidding on keywords can be a successful strategy for increasing your presence on-line, though it may not always lead to sales.

Maximizing Your Sales...

Growing your client base and gaining new clients/accounts is the basic elemnet of sales coverage.
If you are reevaluating your sales coverage, here's a few questions and tips to consider...

Are you selling to the right market?

How do your customers want to do business? A recent client study shows that many prefer to do business over the phone versus a face-to-face visit. This is because of tight schedules and time taken from actual sales the buyers can be conducting during the time of a face-to-face meeting. Larger buyers prefer to have the option to meet and to buy over the phone.

When to do a face-to-face sale or a sales call? Face-to-face is valuable. It allows the buyer to see and feeel the product, but if your an experienced seller then a sales call is a walk in the park.

Do you have alternate channels of distribution? This is basically networking. Are there people out there that can add some of your items to their sales? For example, if a friend makes a sale of a vase, they can add a greeting card with it. This will get that buyer interested in my card designs and bring them to my site just to browse and maybe later becoming a customer. Many people I knoe do this with business card exchanging, but an actual item is so much more affective, in my opinion. This tactic is also helpful with website/URL's/ Exchanging links can help drive traffic. This works by placing someone elses URL on your site as they do the same.

Is your marketing plan and sales plan the same? Your marketing plan should back-up your sales coverage. You need to create awareness to help sales indentify new leads.

Jumpstart Sales with an ol'School approach...

Socrates taught his students to ask questions that will make others question their own assumptions. With this thought in the aspect of sales we can persuade buyers to open up, examine all consequences of their position and work with you or your sales rep to close a sale that works for both.

ie: "Mrs. Hill, I will like to discuss the products, which I mentioned in our phone conversation earlier this week. I would like to know your thoughts, so we can focus the meeting on what interests, questions or hurdles you may have."

The point is to get the buyer to tell you 'NO' before they can think of saying, 'NO'. How is this possible? Well if the buyer tells all the reasons why they think your product will not or why they can not accept your sale at the point in time, you can work with them and around any situation that comes up. Once the buyer has done that, you keep asking questions: "Tell me more..." "What would help me understand more..." "what can make this easier..."

Some inexperienced salespeople do not listen to the buyer.
Don't get impatient with the buyer, because they are stilling sizing you up. Let them talk and vent, don't just jump in with assurance that you can be better then other vendors. Inquire more on they feel on certain situations they discuss. This will help identify the buyers personal motivators and show you have remorse and care for them as well. Basically it gives you a better connection with the buyer.

Key point here is to listen to your buyer(s) with eyes and ears. Body Language speaks in volume. Keep the meeting/conversation productive while identifying what they need and want.

This is a true fact. I have not personally done this with shops, wholesaling, B&M's, but at craft shows I have exercised these tactics with people who have stopped at my booth. In return, a few shows have turned those same people into buyers through my website, with revenue in the hundreds.

Notes here were gathered from

'Sales & Marketing Management Magazine'

Article: 'Socrates Makes A Call' by DALE KLAMFOTH

SALES 101

Here are some basic SALES 101 skills:

Locate and manage your territory

Cold-Calling (it does work)

Plan and execute an end to end sales pitch

Understands the buyers business challenges and opportunities

Plan a successful meeting with prospective buyers

Follow the buyers sales process and what your product can do to help improve it

Know their competitors and their products

Negotiate

Close

Knowing the competitors selling strategies and creating a counter strategy for the buyer can be a helpful tactic in your sales pitch. PART 2

A quick re-cap from Keep In Sight What Matters PART One:

We discussed the Golden Rule of Marketing, acknowledging that your website is truly a reflection of you

and the importance of it look, capability, load speed

and conversation with prospective customers and current customers...

To read more click here.

PART 2
So your site is in shape and now you need to attract visitors... Online marketing is an extension of what you do offline. Customers become aware of the existence of your website your marketing activities like, placing your web address/URL on your business cards, mailings, email signatures, word of mouth, and advertising.

The more ways you get your web address in the face of your target audience, the more traffic your site will get. Networking with like minded business friends is an excellent idea; linking to each others websites. 'Email-a-friend' links encourages visitors to pass your site on and drives more traffic to your site. There is also affiliate marketing, in which your site appears on sites of related products/items, but you must pay them for each sale they generate. For some this may be the best way to go, but since we are looking to make this the simplest way of getting exposure I personally do not like affiliate marketing...

Search engines are the primary way people find your site. Natural search results are those which the system returns based on how popular a site is, while paid search generally refers to the ads that appear adjacent to the natural results. An idea is to ask owners of other websites (related to your business) to link to yours, as the more sites link to you the higher your site ranks with search engines. *We will get further into search engines later this week...

To know if what you are doing is a success, you should first determine what each particular action is worth to you, like What is the value of an email address versus a phone number versus and appointment or sale. On the internet you can test different methods quickly and cheaply. You can set up different landing pages on your website that will greet visitors from multiple sources. Each web page serves as a front door to your site, so the information presented needs to be relevant to the ad or site from which your visitor came from.

So basically here you what to remember first and foremost that your site is as important as a physical shop because as when a customer walks a shop they are looking to find and see what the store advertises to offer or sale. With your site (if you sold flowers) a prospect/visitor will be looking for floral themed product line, and they do not have the opportunity to talk to you directly so your site is responsible for telling them everything they want to know and when its just too much for your site to handle it must be able to provide that visitor/prospect with a way to contact you. Also, know that the web is your friend not your enemy because you can get tons of advertising without blowing holes in your pocket....

Stick around this week when we explore

SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING-

Enhance your position in search engine rankings through SEO and SEM.....

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://smlbiztlk.blogspot.com/2009/01/keep-in-sight-what-matters-part-2.html' title='Keep In Sight What Matters... Something like society, if you ask me. With some knowledge of the web and common business sense, you can make the Internet work for you.

GOLD RULE OF ONLINE MARKETING?

Cost efficiency and scale are 2 great advantages of the web. If your business is online and primary online its open 24 hours a day whether you are there or not. It represents you to your target audience and prospects when its convenient for them-after a craft/trade show, from a business card they found stuffed down in their wallet or purse or by word of mouth. So your site should be a simple manifestation of your company, working with you, providing information and making sales.

If your website is product based, then it is every bit as important as if you had a physical store and requires the same amount of attention. If you are selling a service then your site becomes an extension of your sales force. An effective website will improve returns on all marketing activities.

A unique and innovative web design should be your goal to create a buzz, but does not have to destroy you before you can reap benefits of your business. Be realistic and practical about your sites layout so to attract and retain your customers attention.

Here's a quick checklist:

Is your site simple to understand and easy to navigate?

Whats the load time? How fast does it load?

Is it relevant and focused on customer information?

Does it provide customers an easy way to contact with you?

The information provided is a courtesy of OPEN BOOK American Express.
Stay tuned for part 2 later this week.

'08 Dow Winners and Losers

Well as a business person I always say its important to know what the enemy (competition) is up to and how well or bad they are doing. This important to me because no 1 idea belongs to any 1 individual.

Quick example:
I make and sell cards. Now if business 'XYZ' makes and sells cards and other paper goods I need to or at least should want to know how they are doing. This is because there may be a piece of the paper industry I am missing out on. Also if 'XYZ' creates a card design that is not selling and I happened to create a similar design, then I know it should go back to drawing broad and be modified...

Hope that example helped example my position a little.

Ok now to the winner and loser of the '08 Market:
The only 2 stocks to rise the most during the '08 economic slump were
Wal-Mart Stores with 18% gain and McDonalds with nearly 6% gain.
Family Dollar rose 36% in 2008
GM fell 60 cents/16%
Citigroup dropped nine cents or 1.3%

Now I am not a stocks and bonds expert but what those stats tell me is car items will drop if not dropping already because cars are not selling. Food you know will continue to sell. Banks are falling because of bad loans and the fact that people are scared of this economy and rather have they cash on hand instead of in some bank where they may not see it again. And last but not least that discounted items and stores will sell a lot more because people are holding onto their dollars really tight and are now more concerned with getting the right bang for their bucks...

These are just a few things a business owner should know

when it comes down to designing, production and wholesaling...

Marketing and Advertising Online 2009

This year it is more important to get your products and services seen and heard...
Online Marketing/Advertising creates opportunities that allow you to reach new customers.

With new tools emerging everyday on the web for user interaction, business owners can no longer afford to sit to the side when it comes to marketing their products and services via the web.

The online world assists, aides and compliments existing practices; it doesn't make them obsolete. There is a known fact that many brand name companies today have grown and succeed during poor economic times. With this knowledge you can plan and budget 2009 sales more efficiently. No need to lower your prices and/or cheat yourself of profit but you should know what your consumers are thinking and feeling with a market now on its knees...

I have started this blog preaching the budget aspect and still I stand by it because if you budget correctly you will be able to withstand the hike in prices and other wild things that may happen this year, while still providing affordable quality handcrafted goods...

There was also mention during the holidays how many people were not shopping as they have done many years before. They were buying handmade items. Craft stores seen small spikes in sale as the holidays drew near, because as one customer said, "Its easier to make a gift a then to spend money that may not be there tomorrow..." This just comes to show you how things will change this year and how it can be better for crafters and sellers alike...

Keep up with me as we journey through 2009 and this failing economy.

Become a follower, see and read facts that may help you!

Getting into the New Year Swing of things!

The Year has begun and there is so much to do...
Where do we start and where do we go from last years sales heading into the future? Well allow me to share with you a few tips and pointers I am sure will get you off to a great start.

First of all breathe... For many, it was a hectic but extremely fun first year selling our crafts anywhere we can. To the pros out there...well Congrats on yet another great year. Back to us FRESHMEN we have to get things in order. So I suggest the first step being to go over last years stats. Review your books, evaluate you C.O.GS (cost of goods) Expenses compared to what you actually made. Be sure your books are in order because we are also entering tax season. Look at what you spent the most and where you made the most. This will surely be helpful 2009....

Concentrate on formulating a budget and sticking to it the best way you can. If you spent hundreds on things, whether items/projects or events, which had no return, you should reconsider doing that again...

If you didn't do your research last year then do it this year. Google the items or service you are providing and see what others are doing, charging and saying about it. There is always something going on out there and the best way to stay on top of things is to be in the middle of it...

Advertise! Yes I said it ADVERTISE!!! No I am not saying go buy a $300 ad on some website for a week, but do the FREE Stuff, keywords, pay per click, Project Wonderful, Own the Hour, etc. I did this last year in December, no lie I had 6500 views the next morning... Excited? Heck yeah I was! But then really mad with myself because I did so late in the year! The more people see you the more your name is burned into they subconsciousness.

Join Social Networks and do creative Blogging. Social Networks are great more because of the motivation that can almost literally jump out and get you. They do help get you a few sales too... (SMILE) But a Social Network is worth its weight in gold because other then motivation and new friends you find out things you never knew about selling, even about your craft. Blog? Sure why not! just be sure to be creative... I have seen so many blog doing the same thing its kind of nuts. They say blog as often as possible, like everyday. Funny thing is the some of the ones that do not blog everyday are way interesting and fun to look at and read then those that have a post for everyday...

Hey its just something to think about, to get you off on the right track for 2009!

Falling Retail Sales...Is there any HOPE in the horizion?

Retail sales for the 5th straight month declined in November, as people grew more worried of losing their jobs and the market continuing to tumble. The Commerce Dept said that reatil sales fell 1.8% from October.

A report in November showed gains that may have been a result of retailers giving deep discounts and the fact that Thanksgiving fell closer to the end of the month sparking more sales for Black Friday. Sales in elcetronics rose 2.8%, as did sporting goods, books and music stores. Clothing , furniture and restaurants also notched a few gains.

Also with the price drop of gas, consumers have a bit more to spend while struggling to survive this economic crisis.

The above facts of from the New York Times Saturday Edition (Dec, 2008).

This is important for us to know because our products may need to be adjusted. Because we are designs, manufacturers, though many do not mass produce, you produce goods that can and will be used by the public (consumer) and knowing where and what your customer is doing and going through is important to know so you are pushed to the side as a luxury that just cant be afforded at this time.

Its that time of year again...

Yes it is that time of year again for those of us who are running our businesses faithfully and whole heartedily. Well today I want to pitch a few ideas and give you a few tips on how to be sure you are ready.

As I have been mentioning, create a budget!

First get a detailed idea of your 2008 expenses and revenue.

Next, project expenses and revenue for the remainder of the year. Having a picture/idea of a full year will help you know, what and where you need to cut back and/or alter for the coming year.

Once you have this financial picture/projection of your revenue and expenses for the year, you can create a budget for 2009, knowing how much you need for every sector of your business: material, production, shipping and profit.

*Tip: start with revenue goals (February I want to increase 3% from 2008). Then do your expenses and overhead. Be sure to add your ‘just in case’ expense totals (March 2008 I spent $85 with revenue of $100, this year I need to cut some of that expense to really see my revenue).

Now to the most commonly known business marketing tool and advice…
Promote, Promote, and Promote some more!

I for one know the best to get people to remember and know my company I have to be in their face. Greeting Cards are everywhere. In almost every store, on every corner, in every town, so I have a lot to compete with and ground to cover. The best way to do that, besides craft shows in different towns/city’s and states, is to give it away for FREE or offer a something a little extra… Whether you give a gift as favors, thank you gestures or for the holidays, the point is to get your name known and remembered.

When doing this, remember you are in the business of making money not losing money, but your give-a-way should be of good quality. Set a limit, which should include production, packaging and delivery. Your give-a-way(s) should represent you and your business, so it should be something done with great effort as if it were a regular purchase, but still without exceeding a budget. We all know how important packaging is. Your items should be well packaged, because presentation means a lot. Besides you never know if the item will be giving to a third-party which could end becoming a future customer. I have learned that proper etiquette when sending an item is to include a note/letter whether handwritten or printed. This lets the recipient know you care and appreciate their business. I read somewhere that your gift or favor should be of relevance. I feel, as in my case, that the customer should be able to pick the theme. Makes no sense of me sending or giving-a-way a new born congrats card if they are not having children or no anyone who is…So I try to allow the person to pick a theme and in turn I would give them a card displayed or create a new card for that theme.

Holiday SALES?

Well the Holidays are officially here!
BLACK Friday has come and gone...
CYBER Monday has rode away...

So now whats next?
With the economy still folding down upon its knees what do WE the small guys do now?

I have read and seen so much ups and downs that can mean great things for some and even worse things for others. With all the major layoffs from the big companies out there, a report was out that many people have resorted back to the days of AVON, Tupperware and even handcrafting their owns goods for sale. In the beginning of this economic down fall I read some where that many big wig companies out there now have made great gains during down times like this. I think it all depends on how you are getting out there.

You have to think like this:

Big companies have BIG expenses, salaries and overhead

The little guys (us) are more down to earth, budget wise, and can work with prices that will make retailers and consumers happy and in control of their money

With BIG bills comes BIG prices that small businesses and retailers cant afford and, poof, enter the real little guys (us)

Patience is the key to winning the race, who says slow and steady doesn't make it last longer?

So if you did not get the HOLIDAY SALES you were looking for, don't be upset, but be determined to make 2009 your year! There is gonna be lots of space for us to grow...

the Power of E-Mail and E-Mail Marketing

It seems many businesses have turned to e-mail as a means to tackle today's marketing challenges by creating long-term relationships with their customers via e-mail marketing/newsletters. "E-Mail marketing has become the cornerstone of relationships," says Stephen Dietrich, president of Neoplane Inc. "Its a way to expand the dialogue, sustain the conversation, and engage in a true customer journey."

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) expects there will be an increase in e-mail marketing by end of 2008. This is to say that many businesses are investing into e-mail marketing/newsletters. I for one can attest to this notion as I am sure you can to. Just thinking of how many times I've opened my inbox and seen newsletters/e-mails and promotional info from everyone and anyone on and off the web? Many of which I find to be helpful and interesting and then there are those that mean nothing and are just a big waste of space. Though with my newest boutique Handcrafted by LaMar , I do send newsletters to all prior and current customers to promote sales. I later found out that that could be a mistake in my attempt to grow sales, awareness/exposure and can be a sure way to be rejected.

A research indicates that e-mail marketing will grow by 75% in the coming year. Businesses often now send out newsletters to build a loyal following instead of an immediate response. In other words they create a buzz over a period of time of their product/service to get people talking...

How do you get e-mail addresses for this?
Well one way is at craft shows, fairs and festivals. I know for myself from the few I have done, I have had many people stop and my table and ask me plenty of questions about my cards and the Diaper Cakes I had on display. Never did I once think to offer more info, tutorials and other SALES or deals by gathering and send out e-mails. This would be a great way to get more exposure, expand and build a following.

The topic here today is not about contacting someone one time about a one day SALE, but about communicating on a continual basis between two people: you and your customer/prospect.

A key thing here is knowing when, where and how often. Everyone hates spam mail and no one likes an over crowded inbox. This is maybe the biggest challenge and pitfall in the whole scheme of things here with e-mail marketing/newsletters. As mentioned in The Advertiser, "another problem is the ever changing rules and regulations to e-mail campaigning and consumer taste."

Information of this post was gathered by La-Mar D Lynch

from The Advertiser "The Evolution of E-Mail" written by Ellen Neuborne

A Sit Down with Va's own CALLIDORAS....

Your Small Biz Talk brings to its readers small business growth in the making with a crafter from Virgina who is making a name for herself online and expecting phenomenal growth for 2009.

Actual interview:
Hi. Today we would like to sit down with you and talk shop (so to speak).
We have been surfing the web looking for the little guys who have been making big strides in business... OK!

So if you can introduce yourself and your shop/boutique and tell us how long have you been in business?
My name is Terri Collins and I opened my shop, Callidora's, a year ago in December. Before that, I had a jewelry shop online called LQQKS2Thrill, but the jewelry market was so saturated that I just sort of gave up. I have been self-employed for the last 5 years doing various things - always reinventing myself. I have finally something in Callidora's that was lacking in my other attempts - true expressive creativity and I really enjoy making others feel beautiful and confident with my works.

Where can one find your items/merchandise?
My "hub", if you will, is www.callidoras.com. All of my current collections are housed there, as well as my Custom Work Gallery - a photo essay of commissioned work. I also sell on community sites, such as Etsy, Artfire, DaWanda, and am in the process of setting up shop on ShopHandmade.com.
I physically have items at ArtSpot in Corsicana, Texas, and through EmilyRoseJewellery.com - she monograms aprons she purchased from me. My blog also showcases my work and where it can be found.

How is it having a website and selling on a network site (such as Etsy/Ebay)? What are the pros and cons?
I feel that they are very different right now during this start-up period. I started on network sites, and after about 4 months decided to go with my own website. Eventually, my hope is to have most of my sales coming through my website rather than the network sites, but I understand that takes time, advertising, and an established network of customers. Statistically, my website gets as much traffic as all the network sites combined, but all my sales come through the network sites. The pros of my site are: the ability to sell what I want without rules and regulations; the ability to create a newsletter and maintain a direct marketing list; the ease of creating search engine ads; statistics reporting; and image hosting. The pros of the network sites are: the ease of creating a working shop; built-in networking community; the site itself has its own marketing; the ability to bid on Custom Work Requests; and not having the hassle of setting up a cart.

Do you advertise?
I do. Right now, I use a lot of free and low cost avenues because I have to keep my capital for supplies. My hope in 2009 is to have consistent enough sales to be able to purchase advertisements/banners on high-traffic Internet sites.

Are you a part of or partake in any networks/groups, such as MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc... How do these networks help your business grow?
Oh goodness, yes! I don't see how a business can thrive on the Internet if you aren't all over the place! I'm on MySpace, Twitter, IndiePublic, Smidge and WeLoveEtsy. I was on Flickr, but their "marketing" restrictions have left me feeling that it's not worth the effort to keep it up. I know many feel they have gotten a lot of sales from Flickr, but honestly, there are so many online avenues that it would be a full-time job just to keep your presence in the forefront!

We are approaching the Holidays and the end of the year with a dropping economy. We have also introduced a new president to the USA. So how do you prepare or drive your business to further success with all that in mind?
Our economy has been dropping for some time and there has also been a slow but steady shift away from the commercial and big corporations among shoppers. I'm very excited for the future - when you're down, the only way to go is up! And Yes, we can! I try to offer specials for the holidays and as promotions throughout the year, but as an Individual crafter selling my wares - I have to make money and pay bills too. I try to keep in mind that there are many people out there who aren't feeling the crunch as much as the middle class and I try to market to those demographics. I have also increased my presence on DaWanda and plan to really push that in the coming year to capitalize on the European market. I realize that global economy is hurting, but if your items are available to the world - you're bound to see an increase in sales!

As you know here at SBT (Your Small Biz Talk) we try to share new ways to do the impossible. So is there anything you can share with us about marketing and running an online business?

Marketing is so very important. No one will know you're there if you don't shout it out to them. My advice is to find 3-5 online marketing avenues that are user-friendly to you and stick with them - really build a base. Create the best product you can, and manage your time wisely. I was given some really good advice when I started Callidora's that I didn't have in my other ventures:

Set a price that reflects your supplies and your time, and don't lower it to make sales. Lower prices don't bring in more sales in the crafting world - that works for Wal-mart, and that's not who I am trying to be. My design and construction time is valuable and my heart is put into everything I make. Each item is special and has it's own characteristics, even if it's the same item in a collection that's been made several times.

Marketing can take over if you let it. Set up a time management schedule and stick to it. i.e. First, check emails, log-in to all your accounts and spend an hour updating/networking. Then get off the computer, and craft for a few hours. Have lunch, take a break, go for a walk, whatever. Do more crafting or supply ordering/shopping in the afternoon; check email. Spend your early evening with your family, dinner, favorite show, etc. Then an hour in the late evening, do final updates/networking etc.

Carry your business cards with you everywhere - leave them everywhere, restaurants, the gym, the daycare center, the public restroom, bulletin boards, etc. Get a personalized license plate, bumper sticker, or car magnet that shouts what you do. I have gotten stopped in parking lots for my license plate and car magnet - who knows how many have jotted down the info while sitting behind me in traffic!

Network with other small business people. They will pass your information on to their customers and you should do the same for them - obviously not your competition, but small business people should stick together. Your network intersects my network and we both have new customers! Try to purchase all your supplies or business needs from other SB entrepreneurs - it helps to further the comradery. Lift each other up and bounce ideas off each other. When you don't have a board of directors to brainstorm with, you have to get creative - and bring in like minds.

Special thanks to LaMar Lynch for setting up this resource and taking the time to speak with me. This is a good idea, but it doesn't go far enough.
(First, make sure your cards have pictures of your products on them.)
Restrooms are a great place to leave your cards. Think about all the places you could be leaving your cards:
Starbucks restrooms.
Upscale restaurants.
The restrooms at the Renaissance Festival.
Museum restrooms.
Gourmet stores.
Upscale mall restrooms.

If you make products for kids, leave your cards in the restrooms at Toys R Us, and children's clothing stores. My city is having a HUGE upscale Christmas market this weekend - I'm going to be leaving my cards in all the restrooms. These people are there to SHOP! If you make jewelry, and you live in a city that gets the Intergem Gem and Jewelry show - leave your cards in the restrooms. Those shoppers are there because they want to buy jewelry.
In the dressing rooms of stores that cater to your target customer.
At the country club, if you belong, or know someone who does.
If you have the right kind of product, you might do well leaving your cards in the restrooms at sporting events. If you make something that appeals to rock fans, leave your cards in the restrooms at concerts or in clubs."

Well while most of the feedback to this post was not so great in agreement with Jordan, this small business owner appreciates and understands her idealism and thinking outside of the box-ness, if I may.

I mean as a small business owner you have to find new leads everyday and in every corner of the world. And if that lead is in the restroom, then so be it. As patron of many malls, restaurants and other upscale establishments, I am not sure if I would pick up some business card from a restroom floor or restroom in general, but I know if it had an image or information of something of interest/importance I would try to remember the contact info or website to investigate it myself later...

So I tip my hat to you Jordan Bailey and wish you lots of luck...

Holiday Business...

Well today or this week rather I have been pondering the idea of the coming Holidays...
I wondered which do I go; which way do I go...

I started filling my boutique with Holiday Cards back in July and have done many if not plenty of promotional sale ideas that to this day still have not panned out in my favor. I did Christmas in July, BUY 2 get 2 and more... Well we are just a few days to Halloween (which I have had no success) and getting closer to Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. I have many Holiday Cards in both my boutiques Handcrafted by LaMar and Handcrafted by LaMar (ETSY).

I have tried my hand at consignment deals and local shops in the area, so this Holiday Season I think I am gonna try again as one way to generate revenue. Social Networks are great tools but many times if the members are not active then you get nowhere as fast as you got there. Advertising is key! This is something I am familiar with and know from working in the fashion industry for a little over 3 years, but money, not only the root of all evil but the power to make things happen, is not in my corner.

My company has had a wonderful year and great exposure but the mechanics or internal management was tough. I have spent plenty on material and show pieces just to get the traffic and sales I have today, but if I knew what I knew now I think I would up more then I am today.

My point here is, with the coming Holidays rushing in and the economy slumping low,
What are you doing to improve or keep your business afloat?
What can you change?
Have you even thought of a plan?

Share with us and let us know... Many of us are always open to new ideas and forms of growing our business.

Pricing Your Goods Part 2 w/Chris Parry

So what's step 2 when it comes to pricing your goods?
Well before you get too deep here maybe take a quick glance at Part 1 of this story:

http://smlbiztlk.blogspot.com/2008/10/pricing-your-goods-part-1.html

Step 2 is simply this:
You need to (for a short while, we will come back to market value) forget what everyone else is selling a similar item for. Then you need to figure out what it ACTUALLY costs YOU to make the item.

This is broken down into four simple things:

ONE-Raw Materials. What is the actual cost of the materials used to make the item, including any waste produced.

Example: if you pay $30 per kilogram for a block of stone to carve a beautiful butterfly that in the end only weighs 100 grams, you don't charge for the stone that is left, you charge for the stone that you bought.

TWO-Labor. We can on for hours about labour but it is just like this. If you want to earn $20,000 year, crafting 40 weeks a year at 40 hours a week, which equals 1,600 hours a year, to earn $20,000 a year, you would have to charge $12.50 an hour JUST for labour.

THREE-Overhead. Everyone has overhead cost. Overhead is how much it costs you to run your business, with or without any orders. Things like, electric, gas, travel, rent, insurance, advertising, etc...This isn't a bill thats paid out of your pocket. It is a bill that is built into the cost of your product.

"Do you think that Mr. Coca cola pays for the running of his factories himself, or do you thing that part of your purchase price actually pays for it?", says Chris.

So lets say that you spend $10,000 a year running your business, and you already stated that you will work 1,600 hours a year (40 wks @ 40 hrs a wk), for each working hour, you should be charging $6.25 per product.

"This isn't a rip-off, it is the cost of ACTUALLY making the product." , says Chris.

FOUR-Profit. Not a dirty word. Profit is how your business makes money. You already charged for labor, which is great because that will be spent on silly things like food and rent and by the end of the week it will all be gone. You have alreay charged for the raw materials, which you have already spent on the item and you have already charged for overheads which will go to those nice people like, Mr Electric Man, or Mr Phone Man, or Mr Business Insurance Man. So your business does need to make a profit. This profit is what will sit in your bank and make your bank manager happy as it grows. It is this money that you can then invest back into the business, so if you want to pay for advertising in a glossy magazine, to get even more business, then it is this profit that will pay for that, to make your business GROW. So profit is not a dirty word but VASTLY overlooked.

This price you now have for your product is called a WHOLESALE price, which means that if you sell your item at this price, shops will come along, buy it, you ill make a living and a profit and they will then typically add 100%-300% (or whatever) and sell it to the public.

Heres a FREE spreadsheet on Chris Parry's blog,
which you can download and it will help you through the process.

http://chris-parry.blogspot.com/2007/12/free-spreadsheet-for-pricing-your-work.html

Chris tells me he put it up on his blog last December
and it has been downloaded over 20,000 times.

I must say I have downloaded the spreadsheet and found it very useful. I use it all the time because this is a business to me. My regular 9 to 5 is a part time gig and pays $14000 (approx) annually and I'd rather make that doing what I love, but I will not see it if I am not charging the amount per card... Again for some this is just for fun but for those out there like me trust me you need this!

Chris said in closing, "Ask Auntie sue what you should sell your precious hamster warmer for or actually work out what you should be selling it for."

Thank for reading and I hope this helps many like it did for me.
Article post original written by Chris Parry re-written by La-Mar D Lynch Thank you and see you later...

Remember if you think big,
feel big and act big about your business
your business will one day become big....

Surviving your business during bad times…

Again we seem to be back on the topic of a budget. It seems that a budget is a sure way to guarantee seeing some growth in revenue and income while running a business. I for one know that a budget is what I needed to see the growth of my company.

Like many of you this all started as a hobby and not too much thought went into turning my craft into a business. One reason for that was because of money! Money to start and build a business, material, production and advertising costs. After a yearlong intensive research into my industry, I found I was not the only person who thought this way, so I decided to give it a try. I use to just go shopping with no aim or direction and craft card after card. I started with a paid site, which got no traffic or sales but found a way to make holes in my pocket. Then I found Etsy.com, which is a great place to sell hand made goods. My sales/revenue were low and my expenses were high. I joined many social networks in an attempt to go the word out about my business and even did the online marketing thing. I will testify that a network is where you need to be to spread the word of your business, but online marketing? Well that needs to be researched and done correctly to see the right results for the money you put in. I also did a bunch of free classified ads as well, but I warn you of the pranksters and scammers out there.

Now 2 years old, with 1 of those years actually selling my cards, I have made great strides in running a successful small business, but today with the economy the way it is I wonder how much longer I can do it. I do crafts shows/fairs and even there you can feel the pinch of this failing economy. That’s when I realized I needed to buckle down and create a budget for the future of my business. I was so used to just going shopping, like a kid in a candy store, I bought whatever was glittered like gold…crafting card after card but if I were to continue conducting business I would need to know what was going. What does it cost to make one card and to ship it? This show cost this, that and third…if I make no money what did I accomplish? Will it lead to future revenue/income?

I suggest recognizing what your financial needs are when it comes to crafting. Don’t buy extra if its not needed. Maybe sketch a new design before you make it, this way you know what you need or want before you walk out the store with the entire stockroom. When you do your next show/event be sure to know what you can do if sales are low and nowhere to be found, to guarantee future sales.

Remember this is your Home-based Small Business, and like a regular job it’s to make money for yourself, home and future. Until the economy picks up, be sure to save what you can don’t spend what you don’t need to spend. Tomorrow your business will thank you for it…

Pricing Your Goods Part 1

This article post was original done by a great business minded Etsy Seller: Chris Parry of

Chris Parry -Handmade jewelry, rings, earrings and silver gifts.

I was given permission by the author to post this article here on my blog

and you know I had to throw a few cents of my own.

"First of all, if you spend 300 hours hand stitching a quilt for $100, this article post may not be for you. If you love your craft so much that you are thrilled to get back the cost of raw materials, this article post still may not be for you." says, Chris.

"This is for those who have taken their craft to another level and created a serious business."

"There are two ways to price your goods for sale [on Etsy.com] in my humble opinion."

Step one...
Once you make the item/product, you can look at it and kind of think what it should sell for. $20 or consider charging what a store like 'Walmart' is selling it for ($20) or you can consider the fact that Auntie Sue said she would only give you $20 for it.

Chris pokes fun and says, "if this is you, please read no further. Instead please wait until it is raining, then go and stand outside for an hour until you are really quite wet. Now come back inside, take your wet clothes to the laundry cleaner in town and ask them how much it will cost to have them cleaned and dried. Surprisinginly they won't say $1, because that is how much you can clean them for yourself. They won't say $1, beacuse that is all Autnie Sue is willing to pay. Instead they will say $5 (or whatever) because thats is price that will help them run and keep their business, pay their bills, make a living and clear a profit."

This is a serious point Chris makes here, because there are some people out there that do exactly that and those actions halt and hinder others who are doing this as a buisness to make profit. 'PIF'- Pay It Forward- is one of those things I my self do not like. PIF is when a seller only charges listing fee and transaction/merchant fees. This makes a $4 item 75 cents. Personally unfair to those who work hard at their craft and now have to compete with aonther who is just about giving it away for the sake of sale number mark-ups. I feel if you are not doing this for profit then be a not-for-profit organization.

So what's step 2 when it comes to pricing your goods? Born in New York City, an American Citizen of Caribbean descent, I noticed a void in this industry amongst many of my foreign counterparts. Not to mention the lack of cards for us men that are not all mushy and soft. At first glance I took it as areas that were untouchable or just hard to be reached. By far this was a misconception on my behalf. Realizing and understanding the many cultures blossoming in this country everyday, I find it to be an important of business.

Being a sole proprietor, not just in the aspect of Tax and Finance, but the sole creator, designer, marketing agent, PR and rep for my business, its hard to cover details such as Business Diversification. My name is La-Mar D Lynch of Handcrafted by LaMar . I started my venture into business through my greatest past time...ART! I loved to draw superheros when I was younger and tried to do abstract art as well, though I was not too great at it. I also loved to write and recite poetry. I thought to myself how can I share both passions with the world? Greeting Cards! I always fantasized what it would be like to be the boss. The Owner. The controller of an empire. So I started DAJaHSI Greetings. A name I choose with the acronym of the first two letters of my children's names. When I first started I got no business and a bunch of 'robot hits' (you know Yahoo and Google Pay per Click Robots). After a while I wanted to give up but then found a great place to sell my goods, ETSY.com.

When I joined Etsy.com I was working full time for a fashion Designer, Jackie Rogers, and did not have the time in world to work on the site. But later that year I was laid off and went at it full time. I really started selling my cards January 10, 2008 and have since accumulated 90+ sales and a lot of recognition. I even found my way into a few craft shows which were great in helping me get ttraffic and the ability to build my own website, Handcrafted by LaMar.com.

With almost a year under my belt selling on and off line, I feel like my business is ready to take to the sky with no limitations. I have 3 blogs up and running: Crafted by Hand, Handcrafted by LaMar, and my newest and most promising blog Your Small Biz Talk. With this question in mind Steven Powell of Co-oper8 Marketing Group, suggest you make goals, plan a budget, define the resources you need and the attention you want to attract at your next event. As when you first started your venture into the business world, you need to set clear realistic goals when preparing for a new event. Determine what you want to accomplish, whether it is just finding new leads, building awareness or increasing sales on/off line.

You need to determine a budget and stick to it. You need not to borrow or spend extra money just to look the best at a show amongst the many newcomers and veteran vendors. Factors like that make reaching your goal(s) impossible. Money should be spent on making/creating more product(s) to improve your chances of increasing sales and awareness. If your goal is to find more leads, then you need to establish how many leads it will take to make a sale? If out of 20 people you can generate 5 sales of $100 profit, then your goal is to attract 20 people to your booth.

There are many other factors to doing events/shows, such as exposure, awareness, and being in the minds of people hoping they will remember your product. But there are greater necessities that you must account for, like furniture-tables and chairs rentals-materials and displays. I have done shows where all I had was my small business sign, table, chair and products. And those few times I did pretty well considering date, time of year and weather. This is not to say that you will have the same outcome as I, but it is to say that your budget is still a factor. If you have the funds, then yes, buy the great big banner and professional graphic signs, purchase the tent, display cases and all the extra nucks and crannies, but be sure to remember that all this factors into your profit, with vendor fee and material cost. You may also want to have catalogs, brochures, business cards, coupons or promo material to build leads and increase sales. All this should be included into your projected budget.

Once all these things have been situated, now its time to go back to basics, “Knowing your target audience…” Who are you trying to get to your booth to buy your product? You will need to target your audience here the same way you would any other marketing campaign(s). Once a person comes to your booth, what are you saying/selling? You have to get your message out properly and if not, you lose potential buyers and profit.

It’s the end of the show and you have found new leads, generated sales and built awareness of your business and product. Breathe… Then follow up on your leads and wait for sales to roll in.

This Week at a glance...

This week we will be chatting it up about

Craft Shows, Fairs and Festivals

and Business Diversity...

Please your voice is important to me and your comments will help structure and build this blog to be one of the best business assistance tools to any and every one out there interested in or looking to starting a business like you and I have from the comfort of our homes...

So please leave a comment and share your insides and thoughts.
